Canadians who love wine will realize that change is afoot with Bill C-311 - a private member’s Bill that has successfully been passed and while still in its infancy does make a difference. The biggest difference is on the Federal level with some provincial response. There needs to be some provincial adaptation on a much larger scale as Member of Parliament Dan Albas talks about in a great little interview with Wine Superstar Natalie Maclean recently. Check it out.

Interview Highlights

Bill C-311 removes some Federal restrictions – NOT provincial

Not all provinces have decided to play along

Federal ruling does not force provincial compliance

BC is the only cooperating province at present

Only 7% of wine purchased by Canadians is Canadian wine…SHAME, SHAME

Smaller wineries will likely need to lobby for changes to provincial rulings

Canada has outstanding wines that need support by Canadians

Provincial Protectionist thinking has to end for Canadian wines to really get some traction

What You Can Do About Bill C-311 Improving Things For Canadian Wineries

Aside from the obvious “BUY MORE CANADIAN WINE!” you can go and find out more about the Bill and its ramifications. Support Dan Albas in his work on the Bill beyond its genesis. Support change to the antiquated prohibition era laws surrounding liquor sales and exporting by any means possible.

Show your support for those organizations that are already in the fight to change wine importation laws like the Alliance of Canadian Wine Consumers — a grassroots, non-partisan, volunteer group of wine lovers. Headed up by Shirley-Ann George as the President and Founder, their goal is to change the provincial and federal laws that make it difficult and even impossible to legally buy and ship wines purchased in another province from the one in which they live.

So folks lets get on with it. You can think of it this way…If more Canadian wineries (not just the biggest ones) were selling more of their wines they would be able to afford to grow their inventory, their R&D departments, their marketing abroad and nationally and they could re-invest into the industry with more innovation and passion. The passion will be there anyways but the growth part, well, thats at least partly our responsibilty.

Why not make it a goal to replace 10% of your wine purchases from abroad with Canadian content? There are so many great choices you won’t be disappointed.

CHEERS,

Greg
